It Takes Two to Win Gold- The Power of Mentoring in Sports

In the world of sports, where the margin between success and failure is often razor-thin, mentoring plays a crucial role. The journey to the top in any sports is seldom a solitary endeavour. At the time this article was written, the Paris 2024 Olympics were well underway, and as we celebrate the medals, here at National Mentoring Day we want to celebrate the mentors who supported many of these athletes, regardless of whether or not they stood on the podium.

This article explores the importance of mentoring and the Olympians who have benefitted from this invaluable support system.

The Power of Mentoring in Sport

Mentoring in sports involves more than just improving technical skills; it encompasses emotional support, strategic guidance, direction and the development of a growth mindset. Effective mentoring should promote professional and personal growth through a process of reflection, questioning, and feedback. In sports, this means mentors help athletes to navigate the pressures of competition, set realistic goals, and maintain a positive attitude throughout challenges.

Great sports mentors possess a blend of empathy, patience, authenticity, and resilience. They provide a safe and supportive environment where athletes can openly discuss their concerns, ambitions, and setbacks. This non-judgmental approach is crucial for building trust and fostering a productive mentoring relationship.

The Olympics is the area where years of training comes down to a single event. Mentorship is essential for success, not only in celebrating each win but creating a supportive space in times of defeat, loss and injury – these are the testing times where the power of mentoring can never be underestimated.

Olympians and Their Mentors: Paris 2024

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, several athletes have shared how their mentors have shaped their careers. British swimmer Adam Peaty credited his mentor Mel Marshall with instilling in him the discipline and resilience needed to excel at the highest level.

Mel Marshall has been a guiding force in Adam Peaty's career. Her mentoring has been instrumental in his development, focusing on both physical training and mental preparation. Peaty has often spoken about how Marshall's belief in his abilities a constant source of motivation (BBC Sport, 2024) has been. A mentors belief in their mentees and the ability to raise them up is a key component in what we recognise as mentoring at National Mentoring Day.

Similarly, gymnast Simone Biles highlighted the pivotal role her mentor, Cecile Landi, played in her return to competitive gymnastics, helping her balance mental health and competitive success, helping Biles manage the immense pressures of being a top athlete. This mentoring relationship has been vital in Biles' ability to perform at her best while prioritising her mental health (CNN Sports, 2024).

We see many top athletes who achieve great success, move over to mentoring the next generation. Here at National Mentoring Day, we understand the power of amplifying talent through this unique skill. Cecile Landi talks about how she will be impacting the next generation after the 2024 Olympic Games “Time for Me to Move On” - How Cecile Landi will start to mentor a new generation

The impact of mentoring in a shared dream of success.

The stories of Adam Peaty and Simone Biles are just two of many that underscore the profound impact that mentors can have on athletes. Mentoring goes beyond the technical aspects of sport; it is about guiding athletes through the emotional and psychological challenges they face, raising them up in times of hardship and being there to celebrate the successes. As we celebrate the achievements of Olympians at Paris 2024, let us also acknowledge the mentors who have been the unseen architects of their success.
